A Navigator is a member of a rare and ancient breed of mutant human, prized for the singular ability to guide starships safely through the treacherous dimension known as the warp. Deep space travel across the vast Imperium depends on plunging vessels into this roiling realm to cross distances that would otherwise take lifetimes, and only a Navigator can steer such a journey without disaster.
Their gift stems from a third eye, the warp eye, set into the forehead and normally kept covered. Through it a Navigator perceives the Astronomican, a psychic beacon projected from Terra, and reads the shifting currents of the immaterium the way a mariner once read stars and tides. Without their guidance, ships risk becoming hopelessly lost, torn apart, or dragged into the grasp of the horrors that dwell within the warp.
Navigators are born, not trained, their power passed down through a small number of powerful aristocratic bloodlines that have preserved the mutation across countless generations. These Navigator Houses guard their heritage jealously, wielding considerable wealth and political influence given how utterly interstellar travel relies upon them. Though feared and set apart by their strangeness, and increasingly warped in appearance as they age, Navigators are indispensable. Without them the Imperium's worlds would drift into isolation, and the fragile threads binding humanity's scattered dominion together would swiftly unravel.
