Imperial Navy

The vast star-fleets of the Navis Imperialis, kilometres-long warships that rule the void, escort the Emperor's armies and bind the Imperium's worlds together.

The Navis Imperialis, known in Low Gothic simply as the Imperial Navy, is one of the two great armed forces upon which the Imperium's survival rests. Where the Astra Militarum holds the ground, the Navy holds the void, commanding the immense fleets of warships that keep order between the stars, break the enemies of Mankind in the dark, and carry the Emperor's armies to wars a galaxy apart. Through its Aeronautica Imperialis branch it also rules the skies above the battlefield, lending wings to the ground campaigns of the Guard.

So vast an institution could not be governed as a whole, and so the Navy is divided among the five great Segmentae Majoris of the Imperium. Each is served by a battlefleet based upon a colossal orbital Segmentum Fortress, the Ring of Iron at Mars for the Segmentum Solar, Hydraphur for Pacificus, Cypra Mundi for Obscurus, Bakka for Tempestus, and Kar Duniash for Ultima, and each is answerable to one of the five Lord High Admirals, of whom the master of Segmentum Solar is reckoned first in seniority. In practice it is the smaller sector battlefleets, of perhaps fifty to seventy-five vessels apiece, that carry out the Navy's daily work.

That work is without end. Its ships patrol the space lanes and shield merchant convoys from pirate and xenos raiders; they escort and deliver the regiments of the Astra Militarum; they hang in orbit to rain fire upon planetary foes; and they lend their strength to the exploration fleets that push into the unknown. From nimble escorts to city-sized battleships, the vessels of the Imperial Navy are the sinews that hold ten thousand scattered worlds together against a hostile galaxy.
