A Rogue Trader is that rarest of Imperial figures: a servant of the God-Emperor granted licence to sail beyond the Imperium's borders and act, in effect, as a sovereign power unto themselves. The source of this extraordinary freedom is the Warrant of Trade, an ancient and priceless document that sanctions its bearer to explore, to trade, and to make war in the Emperor's name across the uncharted dark. The oldest Warrants date to the very dawn of the Imperium, and a few are said to bear the Emperor's own signature, rendering them beyond value and beyond appeal, for by Imperial law and dogma alike no authority may overrule what such a warrant grants.
Part explorer, part conqueror, part merchant-prince, a Rogue Trader ventures where the ordinary citizen may not. Their charter allows them to treat with cultures otherwise forbidden, isolated strands of lost humanity and even xenos empires, and to deal with them as they judge fit, so long as the Imperium's interests are served. In their wanderings they stumble upon forgotten human worlds that Adeptus Mechanicus Explorator fleets will later gather into the fold, and they claim wealth and knowledge that would make a planetary governor weep with envy.
Such power breeds opulence and eccentricity in equal measure. A Rogue Trader dynasty commands its own warships and gathers about itself a hard-bitten court of naval crew, sworn retainers, and hired killers, often salted with mutants, aliens, and other undesirables no respectable Imperial household would tolerate. Bound by their warrant yet answerable to almost no one, they are among the most free, and the most dangerous, human beings in the galaxy.
Imperial Agents
Order of battle
The Rogue Traders field the units of the Imperial Agents — a detachment from the roster:
Kindred formations
Other Imperial Agents formations
Adeptus ArbitesThe Imperium's iron-handed galactic lawmen, judge, jury and executioner in a single armoured figure, upholding the Lex Imperialis across ten thousand worlds.
Imperial NavyThe vast star-fleets of the Navis Imperialis, kilometres-long warships that rule the void, escort the Emperor's armies and bind the Imperium's worlds together.
Officio AssassinorumThe Officio Assassinorum is the Imperium's institution of sanctioned murder, maintaining secret Temples where killers are forged into living weapons. Each Temple perfects a distinct lethal art: the impossible sniper shot, the perfect infiltration, the berserk slaughter, the anti-psychic horror. When the highest powers of the Imperium require a target erased, they turn to these silent executioners, whose marks almost never survive.
Sisters of SilenceThe Sisters of Silence are an ancient order of soulless women, warriors whose very presence is poison to psykers and daemons alike. Born as Untouchables, they render their oaths without a single word, wielding flame and blade alongside an aura of null that smothers sorcery. They serve as jailers and executioners of the Imperium's most dangerous witches, and their arrival heralds the hunt for a psyker of terrible power.
The InquisitionThe Inquisition is the Imperium's ultimate authority, a shadowed order that answers to none save the Golden Throne. Its Inquisitors hunt heresy, daemon, and alien alike, wielding the power to command fleets, judge worlds, and condemn the corrupt to fire. Divided among great Ordos, each dedicated to a different existential threat, its members walk a razor's edge between salvation and damnation in defence of Mankind.
