Logistics Corps

The Departmento Munitorum

The logistical engine of the Imperial war machine, mustering the tithes of men and materiel that feed the Astra Militarum's endless wars.

The Departmento Munitorum is the vast logistical arm of the Imperium, the institution that raises, arms, transports, and supplies the largest military force in the galaxy. A division of the wider Imperial bureaucracy, it exists to answer a single monstrous question without end: how to move oceans of soldiers and mountains of munitions across the light-years to wherever the Imperium is bleeding, and to do so faster than its enemies can kill. It is a task at which it perpetually, catastrophically, and yet somehow sufficiently succeeds.

The Munitorum reckons the founding of regiments and the levy of the tithe, drawing up the manifests by which entire worlds are stripped of their young to fill the ranks of the Astra Militarum. Once raised, these countless soldiers become the Munitorum's charges, dependent upon it for every lasgun, ration-pack, and drop of promethium. When its convoys arrive, armies march to victory; when they falter, whole crusades starve amid plenty for want of the correct requisition form.

Like all Imperial bureaucracies, the Departmento is a labyrinth of staggering scale and staggering inefficiency. Supplies are dispatched to war zones that ended a century ago, regiments are equipped for jungle warfare and deployed to ice worlds, and the sheer waste of its operations would beggar a lesser civilisation. Yet the alternative to its ponderous machinery is no machinery at all, and so its errors are endured as the price of function.

Working hand in glove with the record-keepers of the Administratum, the Munitorum is the sinew that binds the Imperium's armies to its worlds. Its role in the war effort is set out further in the glossary account of the Departmento Munitorum, the tireless quartermaster of humanity's eternal war.
