Navigational order

The Adeptus Astronomica

The order that tends the Astronomican, the Emperor's psychic beacon whose light alone lets the Imperium's fleets navigate the treacherous warp.

The Adeptus Astronomica is the order that sustains the Astronomican, the great psychic lighthouse projected from the Golden Throne on Terra, without which the Imperium could not exist. The beacon's light shines through the immaterium, a fixed point in an ocean of madness, and by it the Navigators of the fleets steer their vessels across the warp toward safe harbour. Cut off from that light, a ship is lost, doomed to drift in the daemon-haunted dark.

The Astronomican is fuelled by the souls of psykers. Deep beneath the Imperial Palace, thousands of chosen minds are bound in choirs, their power drawn together and hurled outward through the God-Emperor's will. Each burns out in mere months, consumed utterly by the effort, and so a ceaseless tithe of witches must be gathered from a thousand worlds to feed the beacon and keep its light from failing.

The order works in solemn cooperation with the imperial agents of the Astra Telepathica, who harvest and prepare the psykers the beacon devours. It is a grim mathematics, souls spent by the thousand so that the wider Imperium might endure, yet none question its necessity. Should the Astronomican ever gutter and die, the Imperium would shatter into ten thousand isolated fragments, and the long night would fall at last.
