The Vigilus Campaign

The Vigilus Campaign was a sprawling war for a single strategically vital world, fought at the mouth of the only stable route through the Great Rift. Vigilus, a bleak sentinel world guarding the Nachmund Gauntlet, became a magnet for conflict, its possession coveted by nearly every power in the galaxy.

The world was beset from all sides at once. Sleeper genestealer cults erupted from its underhives, ork freebooterz descended in scavenger fleets, and the servants of Chaos launched an invasion heralded by Abaddon's own champions. Aeldari raiders, necron dynasts, and other xenos added their strength to the maelstrom, until Vigilus groaned beneath a dozen simultaneous wars. The Imperial defenders, marshalled by the Ultramarines lord Marneus Calgar, fought desperately to hold the crumbling world together.

What made Vigilus so precious was its position, for whoever held it commanded passage between the two halves of the riven Imperium. The campaign became a byword for the new age of endless, multi-sided war, where no single enemy could be faced in isolation. Though the defenders managed to preserve their grip through immense sacrifice and the timely arrival of reinforcements, the world remained a battered flashpoint, forever poised on the knife-edge between salvation and ruin. Vigilus stood, but only just, and the wider war for the gauntlet raged on.
