Esca Vornhast is Princeps Maximus of Legio Gryphonicus, and for longer than most men live he has ridden the Manifold of the Warlord Titan Ferrum Ira, the Iron Wrath. So long has he been wedded to the god-engine that the boundary between man and machine has worn thin; he feels the Titan's guns as his own hands and its ancient rage as his own heart. Among the War Griffons he is a figure of near-legend, a commander whose battle-honours stretch across a dozen crusades.
Vornhast is famed for the aggression of his command, leading his maniples forward in relentless, disciplined advances that grind the enemy to ruin. He holds to the old doctrines of the Legio, trusting in coordinated fire and unbreakable resolve, and he has never once ordered a retreat. His enemies have learned to dread the tread of the Iron Wrath, for where Vornhast walks, the War Griffons follow, and defeat follows them.
Yet the long communion with his god-engine has exacted its price. Those who serve beneath him whisper that the Iron Wrath's ancient machine-spirit grows ever stronger in his mind, and that one day the Griffon Lord and his Titan will become truly one, a fate Vornhast, it is said, does not fear but welcomes.
