M31 (the Horus Heresy)

The Battle of Pluto

The fortress-moons of Pluto, keystone of Sol's outer defence, are stormed and shattered as the traitors force the Elysian Gate.

The Battle of Pluto was fought at the threshold of the Sol System, where the fortified worldlets of Charon, Kerberos, Styx, Nix and Hydra formed the mighty bastion known as the Elysian Gate. These forts were the outermost lock upon the door to Terra, and Rogal Dorn had made them near impregnable.

The Imperial Fists held the Pluto forts with grim discipline, their guns capable of savaging any fleet that dared the approach. Yet the Sons of Horus came in overwhelming strength, and the Warmaster's forces employed treachery, sabotage and relentless assault to crack the fortress-moons one by one. The void about Pluto boiled with wreckage as boarding actions raged through freezing corridors lit only by muzzle-flare.

When the last of the great forts was silenced, the Elysian Gate stood broken, and with it the outermost shield of Sol. The fall of Pluto sent a shudder through the defenders of Terra, for they knew now that no fortress, however mighty, could halt the Warmaster's advance forever. The enemy was within the walls of the Solar System, and the final reckoning drew near.
