The Flesh-eater Ghouls are among the most tragic horrors of the Mortal Realms, mortals driven to eat the flesh of the dead who have, in doing so, lost all grip on reality. A curse settles upon them, born of the vampire Ushoran's shattered delusion, and they no longer see the truth of what they have become. In their broken minds they are gallant knights, their rotting warrens are shining palaces, and their cannibal feasts are grand banquets of roast venison and fine wine.
Ruled by mad Abhorrant kings who fancy themselves benevolent lords, the Flesh-eater Courts muster ragged hordes of loping ghouls, gaunt crypt horrors and monstrous terrorgheists that were once noble beasts. They ride to war believing they defend honour and civilisation, when in truth they descend upon the living to butcher and devour, dragging the screaming back to their charnel halls.
There is a dreadful pathos to the ghouls, for their delusion is total and sincere. They fight with the desperate courage of true knights, and their kings weep real tears for fallen courtiers. Yet nothing can wake them from the nightmare, and to accept their hospitality is to end upon the feasting table, another guest at a banquet of the damned.
