The Great Harlequin stands at the summit of a Masque, the supreme leader beneath whom every Troupe Master, Death Jester and Shadowseer takes their place. To hold the title is to be keeper of the Masque's deepest secrets, custodian of its most sacred performances and final arbiter of when and where its warriors will dance to war. In the retelling of the great sagas the Great Harlequin often takes the role of the Laughing God himself, and something of Cegorach's cunning and malice seems to cling to them ever after. In battle they fight with the same impossible grace as their followers, though honed across centuries of performance into something few living things can match. Wise, ancient and wholly inscrutable, a Great Harlequin perceives patterns in the skein that others cannot, and leads the Masque unerringly to the moment when its intervention will tip a war, or a fate, upon its edge.
