The Officio Assassinorum is the Imperium's most secret weapon, an order of peerless killers who accomplish with a single death what armies could not achieve in a century of war. When a heretic warlord, a xenos overlord, or a traitorous governor threatens the stability of a sector, it is often cheaper in blood and treasure to end one life than to fight a war, and it is the Officio that is called upon to do the ending.
The order is divided among distinct temples, each cultivating a wholly different philosophy of murder. The Callidus wear the faces of their victims, the Vindicare strike from impossible distances, the Eversor become living weapons of berserk slaughter, and the Culexus hunt the psyker with the void where their own souls should be. Rarer temples still exist in whispers, their disciplines guarded as jealously as any relic. Each assassin is a lifetime's investment, conditioned from childhood into a flawless instrument of death.
Such power is too dangerous to unleash lightly. The Officio answers to a shadowy oversight of the Adeptus Terra, and the sanction to deploy an assassin must be granted from the very summit of Imperial authority, the High Lords of Terra themselves. This deliberate restraint ensures the temples remain a scalpel of the state rather than a dagger turned against it.
Secrecy is the order's shield and its creed, for an assassin who is known has already failed. Its existence is denied to the masses and acknowledged only among the Imperium's highest servants. The history and structure of this lethal institution are recounted in the account of the Officio Assassinorum, with its temples and disciplines further detailed in the glossary of the Officio Assassinorum.
