The Navis Nobilite is the confederation of aristocratic houses whose members possess one of the most precious and unsettling gifts in the Imperium: the ability to see and steer through the warp. Born with a third eye set into their brow, a Navigator can gaze upon the roiling immaterium without being driven mad, guiding a starship along the shifting currents of the empyrean and holding it true against tides that would swallow any ordinary vessel. Without them, faster-than-light travel across the galaxy would be all but impossible, and the Imperium would shatter into isolated fragments overnight.
The Navigators are a stable mutant strain, a bloodline apart from baseline humanity, and this sets them at once above and outside ordinary Imperial society. Where any other mutation invites the purge, theirs is sanctioned and prized, for their utility is beyond measure. They organise themselves into great dynastic houses, jealous of their bloodlines and their contracts, marrying and scheming across the centuries to preserve the potency of their gift and the fortunes it commands.
Each Navigator navigates by the light of a distant psychic lodestar, the beacon at Terra that shines through the warp like a sun through fog. Their sight grows with age and mastery, from the youngest whose gaze can slay a mortal to the eldest whose warp-touched forms have become something scarcely human at all. At the apex of every house presides a patriarch or matriarch of terrible power.
Bound to the Imperium yet answerable chiefly to their own kind, the houses of the Navis Nobilite guard their monopoly with ferocious pride. Their nature and their place in the Imperium are explored further in the glossary account of the Navis Nobilite, and the beacon they steer by is chronicled in the account of the Astronomican.
