The Commissariat

The Imperium's iron enforcers of loyalty, whose black-coated commissars steel wavering armies with inspiration, terror, and the swift bolt-round of execution.

The Commissariat, arm of the Officio Prefectus, exists to ensure that no soldier of the Imperium ever falters in faith or courage. Its commissars are drawn from the Schola Progenium and hardened into instruments of absolute discipline, dispatched to the regiments of the Astra Militarum where they stand behind the lines as watchful judges of loyalty. Where morale breaks, they mend it, and where cowardice or heresy festers, they burn it out.

A commissar is at once inspiration and threat. In the trenches they lead by example, striding through shellfire with pistol drawn and sword raised, rallying broken squads with words and presence. Yet the same hand that steadies a wavering line will, without hesitation, put a bolt through the skull of the man who turns to flee, that his death might harden the resolve of a hundred others.

Commissars answer not to the generals they oversee but to their own hierarchy, and their authority extends even to the summary execution of officers found wanting. This makes them feared and resented in equal measure, isolated figures who walk apart from the men they guard. It is a lonely, thankless duty, but the Imperium endures precisely because such iron souls stand ready to spend a few lives to save the many.
