Psychic Beacon

The Astronomican Choir

The vast choir of astropaths who pour their souls into the Emperor's psychic beacon, lighting the way for every ship that crosses the warp.

The Astronomican Choir is the congregation of psykers whose ceaseless sacrifice sustains the great beacon of the Imperium, the psychic lighthouse that shines through the warp and makes travel across the galaxy possible. Thousands strong, these astropaths are gathered in a vast chamber beneath the Imperial Palace on Terra, arranged in tiers about the Golden Throne, where day after day they surrender their own psychic essence to be gathered, focused, and hurled across the void as a signal that never dims.

The beacon they feed is the Astronomican, the light by which the Navigators steer their ships through the treacherous currents of the immaterium. Yet its radiance is not conjured freely. It is the Emperor Himself who focuses the choir's massed power into a single coherent beam, and the effort of channelling ten thousand souls at once is one of the many burdens that has kept Him bound in undying agony upon His Throne for ten thousand years.

The cost to the choir is no less terrible. The act of pouring out one's soul consumes the astropaths who perform it, and the demands of the beacon burn through their number at a merciless rate, so that fresh psykers must be delivered to the chamber in an unending tide simply to hold the light steady. Those who serve know that their tenure is measured not in years but in the swift guttering of their own life-force.

The endless procession of psykers required to man the choir is gathered and prepared by the Adeptus Astra Telepathica, whose Black Ships harvest the sanctioned and the doomed alike. Silent, sacrificial, and utterly indispensable, the Astronomican Choir is the beating psychic heart of the Imperium, without which its million worlds would be cast into isolated darkness.
