The Gothic War was a sprawling naval conflict of the 41st Millennium, fought when Abaddon the Despoiler launched his Twelfth Black Crusade against the Gothic Sector. Unlike the grinding ground campaigns of many wars, this struggle was decided among the stars, as vast fleets clashed across the void in engagements that lasted decades.
The crusade's true prize was a set of ancient space stations known as the Blackstone Fortresses, relics of a lost age scattered through the sector. Abaddon and his traitor forces seized several of these enigmatic constructs and unlocked their dormant purpose: linked together, they became weapons capable of extinguishing entire stars. Whole systems were threatened with annihilation as the Despoiler turned these instruments against Imperial worlds.
The Imperial Navy, reinforced by Space Marine fleets and the enigmatic Aeldari, fought a desperate campaign to blunt the offensive. In time the tide turned, and several of the captured fortresses were lost to Abaddon when they were seized or destroyed in climactic battles. Though the Imperium claimed victory and preserved the Gothic Sector, the Despoiler escaped with his strength largely intact, and later revelations suggested the entire war had served purposes only he understood. It was another rehearsal, another probing of the defences he would one day shatter in the 13th Black Crusade.
