The Damocles Gulf

The Damocles Gulf is a broad expanse of largely empty space on the eastern fringe of the galaxy, a region of thin and scattered stars that long formed a natural barrier between the Imperium and the unexplored reaches beyond. It was across this gulf that the Imperium first encountered a rising new power at its edge.

On the far side of the gulf lay the young and expanding empire of the T'au, an upstart xenos civilization whose growth alarmed the Imperium enough to launch a great crusade across the void to crush it. That campaign, known as the Damocles Crusade, saw Imperial fleets and armies drive deep into contested space, and though it won early victories, it ultimately withdrew, leaving the alien empire bloodied but unbroken.

The Damocles Gulf has remained a contested and unsettled frontier ever since, a marchland where Imperial and T'au ambitions grind against one another across the intervening dark. Its worlds have changed hands more than once, and its shifting borders have seen repeated bloodshed as two expansionist powers vie for dominance. The gulf endures as a symbol of the Imperium's inability to fully extinguish a determined rival, a stretch of frontier space where the old dominion of humanity meets a hungry and ambitious newcomer.
