M41 · The Sabbat Worlds Crusade

The Sabbat Worlds Crusade

Across a hundred worlds and many decades, the Imperium waged a grinding crusade to wrench the Sabbat cluster back from the grip of Chaos.

The Sabbat Worlds Crusade was a decades-long war of liberation waged to reclaim an entire cluster of worlds that had fallen to the Ruinous Powers. Named for the martyred Saint Sabbat, whose ancient crusade had first brought the region into the Imperial fold, the campaign became one of the defining military struggles of the late 41st Millennium and a byword for grinding sacrifice.

The crusade was launched by the Warmaster Slaydo and carried on after his death by his chosen successor, Macaroth, at the head of countless regiments of the Astra Militarum drawn from a thousand worlds. Against them stood the disciplined and fanatical Chaos armies of the Blood Pact and, later, the even more dangerous Sons of Sek, alongside the archenemy warlords who had claimed the cluster as their own dark dominion.

This was warfare stripped of all glamour: attritional, muddy and merciless, decided as often by logistics, supply and sheer endurance as by any feat of heroism. World after world was contested in grinding campaigns of trench, siege and brutal city-fight, victory measured out in blasted continents and the ceaseless expenditure of common soldiers who would never be remembered by name or deed. Warmaster Macaroth bore the weight of the entire crusade upon his shoulders, hoarding his reserves against the archenemy's cunning counter-strokes, for every world reclaimed left another teetering on the brink of falling back into darkness.

Across its long and bloody span the crusade slowly turned the tide, liberating the Sabbat Worlds one by one at a cost almost beyond reckoning. It stands as one of the great sustained campaigns of the age, a testament to the endurance of the ordinary Guardsman, and it is chronicled in the account of the Sabbat Worlds Crusade.
