M41, the Time of Ending

The Necron Awakening of Sanctuary 101

A garrison of battle-sisters became the first to face the silent, unstoppable dead of a Necron tomb-world stirring from aeons of slumber.

Some horrors announce themselves; the Necrons simply wake. The Necron Awakening of Sanctuary 101 gave the Imperium one of its earliest and most terrible lessons in the nature of the ancient dead, when a remote shrine-world garrisoned by the faithful found the tombs beneath its soil stirring to lethal, tireless life. What began as tremors ended as extinction, methodical and utterly without mercy.

The Adepta Sororitas who held Sanctuary 101 met the awakening with the courage of the truly devout, their faith unwavering even as they confronted an enemy that felt no fear, no fatigue, and no doubt. The battle-sisters poured their fury into the advancing metal ranks, and the metal ranks simply rose again, their wounds knitting shut, their advance never faltering, until faith and flame alike proved not enough against foes that could not be made to stay dead.

The garrison was annihilated to the last soul, but their sacrifice was not wholly in vain, for the record of their end became a grim beacon of warning. Sanctuary 101 taught the Imperium a truth it would spend the coming centuries relearning across a hundred worlds: that beneath countless quiet planets the ancient dead were stirring, patient and pitiless, and that against them courage was often merely the measure of how long a defender took to die.
