The Gromril Great Hammer is a weapon fit for the mightiest warriors of the Dwarfen Mountain Holds, forged from gromril, the near-indestructible silver-steel that the dwarfs prize above almost all other metals. Heavy enough to stagger an ogre and worked with a craftsmanship that borders on the sacred, such a hammer is the badge of office of the Hammerers, the elite bodyguards who stand between a dwarf king and all who would do him harm.
Gromril is drawn from the deepest and most perilous seams, and only a master smith may work it, hammering the raw metal for years until it takes an edge that will never dull and a weight that will never fail. A Great Hammer wrought from it can crumple the finest plate, split shields as though they were kindling, and stave in the skull of a monster with a single ringing blow. The Hammerers wield these weapons in disciplined ranks, and woe betide the foe who breaks upon that unyielding wall of gromril.
To the dwarfs, such a weapon is also an heirloom, its every dent and battle-scar a chapter in the long saga of the hold. A Great Hammer may pass down the generations, growing more venerable with each king it defends, and to lose one to the enemy is a grudge that will be recorded in the Book of Grudges and answered in blood. In the hands of a Hammerer, the Gromril Great Hammer is the immovable resolve of the dwarf race made manifest in metal.
