Cavalry Lance

Bretonnian Lance

The knightly lance of Bretonnia, couched beneath the banners of the Lady as her questing knights thunder into the foe in a glorious, earth-shaking charge.

The knights of the Kingdom of Bretonnia are the finest heavy cavalry in the Old World, and the weapon that carries them to glory is the Bretonnian Lance. Longer and stouter than the lances of lesser realms, it is couched beneath the arm and levelled as a great wedge of armoured horsemen builds to a full gallop, so that the weight of knight, steed, and steel is delivered upon a single point of the enemy line.

To a Bretonnian knight, the lance is not merely a weapon but an instrument of faith. Before battle, the knights kneel and pray to the Lady of the Lake, and when they rise and lower their lances, they believe her blessing rides with them. The charge that follows is a thing of terrible beauty: pennants streaming, hooves like thunder, and a hedge of lance-points that shatters shield-walls and impales monsters upon the first devastating impact.

Such is the force of a lance-charge that a single strike can decide a battle, breaking the enemy's centre and scattering their formations in a single glorious moment. The lance itself often splinters upon that impact, its work done, and the knight draws his sword to finish the slaughter. Yet it is the lance that Bretonnia remembers in its songs, for it is with the lance couched and the Lady's name upon their lips that the knights of the realm win their most storied victories.
