Gromril is the fabled meteoric iron of the dwarfs — the finest metal known to the world, mined from the deep places of the World's Edge Mountains and worked only by the Dwarfen Mountain Holds. Silvery-grey and almost impossibly hard, gromril takes an edge that never dulls and turns blows that would shatter ordinary steel, making armour and weapons of surpassing quality.
Gromril is exceedingly rare, for the richest lodes lay in holds long since lost to greenskins and skaven, and a suit of gromril mail is a treasure passed down through generations, worn only by dwarf nobles, kings, and the elite Ironbreakers who guard the deep tunnels. The dwarfs keep the secret of its working jealously and will part with finished gromril only at a king's ransom; to give a gromril blade as a gift is among the highest honours one dwarf can pay another.
The metal reaches its full potential in the hands of the runesmiths, who inscribe their runes most readily into gromril, for it holds enchantment as no other material can. A gromril blade bearing a master rune is a weapon of legend, spoken of for centuries. To the dwarfs, gromril is more than a metal — it is proof of the unmatched artistry of their race, and a reminder of the wealth locked away in the fallen halls their ancestors once held, waiting in the dark for the day the holds are reclaimed.
