The Phoenix King is the martial monarch of the High Elves of Ulthuan, ruler of the realm and warlord of his people, who reigns alongside the Everqueen in a partnership of crown and priesthood. Chosen from among the greatest princes, each Phoenix King passes through the sacred flames of Asuryan, greatest of the elven gods, emerging blessed and set apart to bear the burden of rule.
The first Phoenix King was Aenarion the Defender, who wielded the Sword of Khaine against the daemonic hordes in ages past and whose tragic legacy shaped all that followed. Since his day, an unbroken line of kings has led the High Elves through war and peril, from Bel Shanaar and Caledor Dragontamer to Finubar the Seafarer, each adding his deeds to the long chronicle of the Asur.
Upon a Phoenix King's death, his body is preserved within the Shrine of Asuryan, and his spirit is said to lend counsel to his successors. The office embodies the martial soul of Ulthuan, forever standing against the encroaching darkness.
