The Time of Legends

The Battle of the Blighted Isle

Grief-maddened and alone, the first Phoenix King drew the cursed Widowmaker from its black altar, damning his line to save his people.

In the earliest age, when daemons ran unchecked across a world without defence, the elves were hunted to the edge of extinction. From their despair rose Aenarion, first of the Phoenix Kings, who drove back the darkness with fire and fury. Yet when the daemons murdered his wife and children, his grief became a thing beyond reason, and he journeyed to the black altar upon the Blighted Isle. There unfolded The Battle of the Blighted Isle, and the choice that would curse his bloodline forever.

Upon that desolate shore stood the Widowmaker, the Sword of Khaine, mightiest and most accursed of all weapons. The god Khaine had bound his murderous essence into the blade, and every guardian and portent warned Aenarion against it. He drew it regardless. With the Sword of Khaine in his grip, the first of the high-elf-realms became an engine of slaughter without equal, cleaving through daemon legions that no mortal power could otherwise have touched.

The blade saved his people, but it damned him and all his heirs. Aenarion's line would carry the curse of Khaine through the ages, and from his sundered sons would come both the noble asur kings and the dark-elves who followed Malekith into darkness. The Blighted Isle stands as the wellspring of all elven tragedy, where salvation and doom were drawn from the same black scabbard.
