Chaos Cabal

The Word Bearers Dark Council

The theocratic high synod of Lorgar's legion, a conclave of Dark Apostles that dictates the endless crusade to drown the galaxy in worship of Chaos.

The Word Bearers Dark Council is the ruling synod of the galaxy's first and most fervent Chaos-worshipping Legion, a body that fuses military command with absolute religious authority. Where other traitor hosts fight for plunder or vengeance, the Word Bearers fight to convert, and the Council exists to ensure that every campaign advances the one true faith. Its decrees carry the weight of scripture, and to defy them is heresy against heresy itself.

The Council is composed of the Legion's most senior Dark Apostles, the warrior-priests who tend its dark theology and command its Hosts. Beneath the primarch Lorgar, exalted now among the daemon-princes, these figures interpret his teachings, sanction crusades, and adjudicate the endless doctrinal disputes that a religion of many gods inevitably breeds. Their authority is spiritual and temporal at once; a Dark Apostle may command warbands, consecrate ground, and pronounce a brother damned in the same breath.

The order's obsessions were forged in the fires of the Horus Heresy, when the Word Bearers first turned the Chaos Space Marines as a whole toward the Ruinous Powers. Having engineered that great apostasy, the Council regards itself as the true architect of the Long War, the missionary vanguard whose sermons preceded every betrayal. Its libraries hold the accumulated liturgy of ten thousand years of blasphemy, guarded more jealously than any relic of war.

Proceedings within the Dark Council resemble both a war-council and a black mass, strategy and prophecy braided together until they cannot be told apart. Every world marked for burning is chosen as much for its symbolic value as its strategic worth, each atrocity staged as an act of devotion. In this, the Council's purpose is chillingly simple. It does not merely wish to conquer the material realm, but to make all of it kneel, and to prove, planet by ruined planet, that the gods were right and the Emperor was a lie.
