The Indomitus Crusade

After the Great Rift tore the galaxy in two, Roboute Guilliman launched the largest war effort since the Great Crusade — a century-spanning reconquest carried on the shoulders of the new Primaris Space Marines.

As the 41st Millennium drew to its close, the galaxy was riven by catastrophe. The birth of the Great Rift split the Imperium of Man almost in half and severed countless worlds from the guiding light of the Emperor. Into that darkness strode a figure out of legend: Roboute Guilliman, primarch of the Ultramarines, returned from ten thousand years of stasis to lead the greatest reconquest since the founding of the Imperium — the Indomitus Crusade.

A Galaxy Torn in Two

The Great Rift was a wound in reality itself, a vast tear in the fabric of the warp that opened across the width of the galaxy in the wake of the Thirteenth Black Crusade. Warp storms swallowed whole sectors, and the eastern half of the Imperium — the region that would come to be called Imperium Nihilus — was plunged into isolation and night.

Cut off from reinforcement and the beacon of the Astronomican, thousands of worlds found themselves besieged by daemons, heretics, and xenos raiders. The Imperium teetered on the edge of final collapse, and it needed a saviour equal to the scale of the disaster.

The Return of a Primarch

That saviour was Roboute Guilliman, one of the Emperor's own gene-forged sons, roused from a wound-induced sleep that had held him for ten millennia. Taking up the mantle of Lord Commander of the Imperium, he assumed authority over its armies and set his prodigious mind to the salvation of his father's realm.

Guilliman resolved that the Imperium would not die on the defensive. Rather than merely hold the line, he would take the war to the enemy across a thousand fronts at once, liberating embattled worlds and reforging shattered supply lines. This grand counter-offensive he named the Indomitus Crusade.

The Primarch's Gift

The crusade's spearhead was a new breed of warrior. For ten thousand years, the Archmagos Belisarius Cawl had laboured in secret on a project entrusted to him by Guilliman before his fall: the creation of an improved Space Marine. The fruit of that labour was the Primaris Space Marines — transhuman soldiers taller, stronger, and more resilient than their predecessors, bearing additional gene-forged organs.

Held in reserve across the millennia, this hidden army was unleashed at last. Vast numbers of Primaris warriors marched to war beside the older Firstborn Marines, and the ancient Chapters were offered the means to raise Primaris brethren of their own. It was, to many, a miracle in mankind's darkest hour.

The Greatest Mobilisation

In scale the Indomitus Crusade rivalled the Emperor's original Great Crusade of ten thousand years before. Billions of soldiers, thousands of fleets, and campaigns spanning decades were bound into a single galaxy-wide war effort under Guilliman's direction.

The crusade was no army of Space Marines alone. It drew in the regiments of the Imperial Guard, the war-engines of the Adeptus Mechanicus, the Adeptus Custodes, the Sisters of Battle, the Imperial Navy, and the towering god-machines of the Titan Legions. All were bent toward a single purpose: the reconquest of a broken empire.

The Torchbearer Fleets

Among the crusade's most vital elements were the Torchbearer fleets. These specialised task forces were charged with reaching Space Marine Chapters cut off and struggling in the war-torn dark, there to deliver the Primarch's Gift — the gene-seed, technology, and Magos Biologis needed to create Primaris warriors.

Each carried an escort worthy of its sacred cargo, including warriors of the Adeptus Custodes and the Silent Sisters of the Sisters of Silence. Where a Torchbearer fleet made planetfall, a beleaguered Chapter might be reinforced and renewed, its fighting strength restored just when it was needed most.

A Century of War

The Indomitus Crusade raged for generation upon generation, its fleets scouring war zone after war zone across the sundered galaxy. Its first great phase drove on for years until it reached a hard-won conclusion at the Battle of Raukos, a campaign fought to reclaim worlds contested at the fringes of the Imperium.

With that phase ended, Guilliman at last returned to holy Terra to take up the burden of rule at the heart of the Imperium. Yet the crusade did not truly end; its armies continued to press outward, and the work of reconquest carried on long after the primarch had departed the front.

The Era Indomitus

The crusade gave its name to a whole new age. The Era Indomitus is defined by Guilliman's return, the rise of the Primaris Space Marines, and the grinding struggle to reunite an empire cleaved in two by the Great Rift.

It is a time of renewed hope purchased at monstrous cost, for every world liberated is matched by another lost to the swelling darkness. The Indomitus Crusade could not undo the catastrophe of the Rift, but it proved that the Imperium would not fall without a fight — and that even in its final hour, mankind could still summon the strength to strike back.
