The Unification Wars were the brutal campaigns through which the Emperor conquered and united the warring tribes and techno-barbarian states of Terra, laying the foundation of the Imperium that would follow. Fought during the closing centuries of the Age of Strife, when humanity's cradle had fractured into countless feuding domains, they were the first great step in the Emperor's long design.
Emerging from the shadows of history to reveal himself openly, the Emperor forged and led armies to bring the fractured world to heel. Foremost among his early warriors were the Thunder Warriors, brutally powerful transhuman soldiers who served as the hammer of his conquest before the more refined Space Marines were ever created. City-state by city-state and continent by continent, the divided peoples of Terra were subdued, whether by diplomacy, subterfuge, or overwhelming force.
The wars secured the Throneworld as the seat of a new order and provided the springboard for humanity's return to the stars. From the disciplined ranks of this era would also arise the golden guardians of the Adeptus Custodes, sworn to the Emperor's person. Though remembered as a time of unification, the campaigns were steeped in blood and hard choices, and the fate of the Thunder Warriors who won them remains one of the setting's grimmer secrets. From this crucible the Emperor turned his gaze outward, toward the Great Crusade to come.
