A power sword is a bladed melee weapon sheathed in a shimmering energy field that lets it slice through armour, flesh, and even ceramite with contemptuous ease. When activated, a lattice of crackling power surrounds the blade, disrupting the molecular bonds of whatever it strikes. The effect renders thick plate and heavy protection almost meaningless, making the power sword a prized weapon of officers, champions, and heroes across the Warhammer 40,000 setting.
The energy sheath is generated by a compact power source, usually built into the hilt, and the weapon typically hums or sparks visibly when drawn. Because power weapons require careful manufacture and a reliable energy cell, they are far rarer and more precious than crude blades or chainswords, and are often reserved for those of high rank.
Power swords appear in countless shapes: elegant duelling blades, broad war-swords, curved sabres, and ceremonial arms of great antiquity. The wider family of "power weapons" also includes axes, mauls, lances, and glaives that work on the same principle. Many are treasured relics, their blades forged centuries ago and their fields maintained by the artisans of the Adeptus Mechanicus. In the hands of a skilled warrior, a power sword is both a deadly instrument and a symbol of authority and honour.
