Flamer

The flamer is an incendiary weapon that spews a gout of burning promethium fuel across a wide arc, engulfing everything before it in searing flame. Rather than aiming at a single point, it saturates an area with fire, making it devastating against tightly packed enemies, entrenched troops, and creatures that rely on numbers to overwhelm their foes. Cover offers little protection, since the flames wash over barricades and pour into trenches and doorways.

Beyond its raw destructive power, the flamer is a psychological weapon. The roar of ignition and the sight of a rolling wall of fire can break the courage of even hardened enemies, driving them into panic. This makes it a favoured tool for clearing fortifications, boarding actions in the cramped corridors of ships, and purging infestations.

The weapon family ranges from the handheld flamer used by infantry to the pistol-sized version and the far larger heavy flamer, which unleashes an even greater torrent of fire. Fuel is stored in canisters that must be replaced once spent, and the danger of carrying volatile promethium into battle is ever present.

Many armies field flame weapons, but they carry particular significance for the Space Marines and the zealous warriors of the Imperium, for whom cleansing fire is both a practical measure and a symbol of holy purgation.
