The multi-melta is the heaviest man-portable member of the melta family, a fearsome short-ranged weapon that reduces armour and war machines to molten ruin. Building on the same principle as smaller melta weapons, it projects an intense blast of thermal energy, but with far greater output, capable of vaporising a tank's hull or immolating the most heavily protected foe in a single searing discharge. Some patterns fire multiple beams or a wider cone, letting a single shot ravage several targets at once.
Its appalling power comes at the cost of range. Like all melta weapons, the multi-melta must be brought close to be effective, forcing its bearer to advance through enemy fire to reach striking distance. This makes it a weapon of shock assaults and armoured ambushes rather than long-range duels.
The Space Marines prize the multi-melta above many other heavy weapons, deploying it to crack open enemy armour, fortifications, and monstrous creatures during lightning strikes. It is often carried by specialist troops, mounted on attack bikes, or fitted to walkers and gun turrets. The hiss of superheated air and the sight of metal running like water announce its use, and few defences in the galaxy can withstand its touch at close range.
