The Mantrapper

Hrothgorn

A cold-blooded Icebrow Hunter of the Winterbite Mawtribe who stalked his quarry into the living mountain of Beastgrave — and found a hunting ground that never runs dry.

Icebrow Hunters are born strange even by Beastclaw reckoning: ogors with frost in their veins, who feel the everwinter as a companion rather than a curse and range far ahead of the alfrostun where the cold lies quietest. Hrothgorn is among the deadliest of the breed — a patient, methodical killer who prefers a well-laid trap to a loud charge, and who counts his frost sabre Thrafnir better company than any ogor he has ever met.

Charged by his Frostlord with bringing back a prize worthy of the tribe, Hrothgorn tracked his quarry into Beastgrave, the living mountain of Ghur — and like all who enter, discovered that the mountain does not care to let hunters leave. It is a measure of his temperament that he considers this an improvement. Beastgrave's tunnels crawl with prey that would be legend anywhere else in the realms, and Hrothgorn works through them steadily, trap by trap, meal by meal.

He does not hunt alone. A huddle of gnoblars scurries in his shadow, hauling his snares, springing his traps and occasionally serving as bait, kept alive by their usefulness and a hard-earned knack for staying out of arm's reach at dinnertime. Hrothgorn tolerates them the way he tolerates the cold: without affection, without complaint, and without ever quite letting them out of his sight.
