Sepheris Secundus is a bleak and frozen world of the Calixis Sector, its surface scarred by mines that plunge kilometres into the crust in search of the ore that is its lifeblood. It is a feudal domain of stark cruelty, where a vast population of serfs and thralls toils in the cold dark to enrich a distant, gilded nobility that rules from the ice-palace of the Court of Thorns.

Governed by the Queen of that court, Sepheris Secundus tithes staggering quantities of adamantium and rare metals to the forge-worlds and shipyards of the sector. Its labourers live short, brutal lives amid the mine-shafts and slag-heaps, kept in line by overseers and the ever-watchful eye of the Adeptus. Rebellion simmers constantly in the frozen depths, only to be crushed with characteristic Imperial mercilessness.

Beneath the world's poverty and misery run darker currents still, for the mines have delved into places best left sealed, and heresy takes root readily among the desperate and the forgotten. The Imperial Agents of the Inquisition keep a wary watch here, for a world of such wretchedness is fertile ground for the whispers of Chaos. Yet the ore must flow, and so Sepheris Secundus grinds on, its people buried alive in the service of the Emperor.
