The Astronomican is the great psychic beacon of Mankind, a lighthouse of the soul that blazes across the galaxy from the Golden Throne upon Terra. It is the Emperor's own will made manifest, projected outward and amplified by a choir of thousands of psykers who are sacrificed to it, their minds burned to ash within days to feed its unending light.

Without the Astronomican, travel through the Warp would be a matter of blind guesswork. Navigators aboard Imperial vessels perceive its distant glow through the tempests of the Immaterium and steer by it as ancient mariners once steered by the stars. Its reach defines the very borders of the Imperium; where its light fails, humanity's dominion falters into darkness. The soldiers of the Astra Militarum are carried to a million warzones by ships that could never find their way without it.

The beacon is sustained at terrible cost. Deep beneath the Imperial Palace, the black ships deliver their cargo of psykers to be consumed, and the golden warriors of the Adeptus Custodes stand eternal watch over the sanctum where the Master of Mankind sits enthroned. Should the light ever gutter and die, the Imperium would shatter into ten thousand isolated fragments, lost in an ocean of night.
