Void Shields

Void shields are powerful energy barriers used to protect the Imperium's largest war machines, starships, and fortresses from otherwise devastating attacks. Rather than physically blocking an incoming strike, a void shield displaces the energy of the blow into the warp, causing shells, beams, and blasts to seemingly vanish in a flare of discharge before they can reach the hull beneath. A single generator can turn aside repeated hits, but each impact strains the shield, and under sustained bombardment it may collapse, leaving its bearer vulnerable until the system can be brought back online.

Because of the immense power required to generate them, void shields are reserved for the mightiest assets: towering Titans, void-faring warships, super-heavy vehicles, and planetary strongholds. They are a crucial part of what makes such war machines so formidable, allowing them to advance through firestorms that would obliterate any unshielded target.

The technology behind void shields is ancient and complex, maintained through the rites and expertise of skilled artificers of the Adeptus Mechanicus. Enemies facing a shielded war machine must often concentrate overwhelming fire to overload its shields before they can hope to damage the engine within, buying the defender precious time. The shimmer and crackle of a void shield absorbing a hit, and the tension as its strength wavers, are defining features of warfare fought on the grandest scale.
