The Pale Wasting was one of the more shadowed calamities of the Age of Darkness, a devastation that fell upon a swathe of the galaxy during the years of the war and left little behind but silence and ruin. Even in the archives of the Imperium its truth is fragmentary, recorded in half-glimpses and contradictory accounts, as though the age itself conspired to forget it.
What is remembered speaks of worlds scoured and populations unmade, of a horror that moved through the void while the Legions were consumed by their war with one another. With the great powers of mankind turned inward upon the treachery of Horus, there were few left to chronicle what happened at the fringes, and fewer still to answer it. Whole domains that had flourished under the Great Crusade simply ceased, their fate swallowed by the wider catastrophe.
The Pale Wasting endures as a reminder that the heresy was not the only terror stalking those years. While primarch fought primarch, the galaxy remained as pitiless as ever, and the distraction of civil war left the door open to older and stranger dooms. That so vast a devastation could pass into legend half-understood is itself a measure of how much was lost in those years.
