Because of this belief, the operation and maintenance of technology throughout the Imperium is wrapped in ritual. The tech-priests who tend them act as priests as well as engineers, mediating between mankind and the spirits of its devices.
In some cases the machine spirit seems to display a will of its own. The powerful spirits of ancient tanks, Titans, and starships are said to remember old battles, favour certain crews, or act to preserve themselves in moments of danger. Whether genuine intelligence, faint echo of lost programming, or pure superstition, the machine spirit shapes how an entire civilisation relates to its technology, with reverence, wariness, and unceasing devotion.
