The Legion Consul

The Horus Heresy

A Legion Consul was a specialist officer of the Legiones Astartes during the Great Crusade and the Horus Heresy, appointed to fulfil a distinct battlefield role beyond the standard command hierarchy. The title of Consul was not a single rank but a category encompassing a range of specialised functions, each carrying its own duties and honours.

Consular appointments included the Master of Signal, who coordinated communications and orbital support; the Siege Breaker, expert in reducing fortifications; the Primus Medicae, overseeing the Legion's Apothecarion; the Forge Lord, master of war-machines; and the Vigilator and Moritat, among others. A Consul might lead specialist detachments or lend their expertise to a wider command.

The flexible Consular structure allowed a Space Marine Legion to concentrate rare skills where they were most needed, and even the disciplined Ultramarines relied upon such specialists. When the Heresy came, Consuls served on both sides, their talents shaping the character of the war's many campaigns and sieges.
