A refractor field is a personal energy shield worn by officers, nobles, and other important individuals across the Imperium to protect them from harm. Generated by a compact device carried on the body, it surrounds the wearer with an invisible barrier that scatters and deflects incoming attacks, causing blows and blasts to glance away in a flash of light. Unlike heavy protective gear, a refractor field guards without encumbering, making it a favoured safeguard for commanders and dignitaries who must appear on the battlefield.
The protection it offers is potent but imperfect. A refractor field can turn aside many strikes, yet it may fail against a sufficiently powerful blow, and its telltale flare when struck can betray the presence of a valuable target to watchful foes. More powerful versions, sometimes called conversion or displacer fields, offer stronger or stranger forms of defence, though such devices are rarer and more precious.
Refractor fields are prized possessions, often built into ornate regalia or worn alongside fine armour by the Astra Militarum's senior officers, planetary governors, and Imperial nobles. Related in principle to the larger storm shield carried by elite warriors, a refractor field represents a more discreet, portable form of energy protection, a shimmering guardian that has saved the lives of countless leaders amid the chaos of war.
