Hive City

A hive city is a colossal, self-contained urban structure that rises kilometers into the sky and burrows deep beneath the surface of a planet, housing populations that can number in the billions. Across the Imperium, worlds so densely settled that they are covered in these towering conurbations are known as hive worlds, and their teeming masses form the labor and soldiery on which the wider dominion depends.

Each hive is a stratified world unto itself. The upper spires belong to nobles and wealthy magnates who breathe filtered air and rarely descend, while the vast middle tiers churn with factory workers, artisans, and the endless bureaucracy of daily survival. Far below lie the underhive, a lawless labyrinth of collapsed levels, forgotten industry, and desperate communities that eke out existence in near-perpetual darkness.

Hive cities are marvels of grim engineering, sustained by ancient recycling systems, subterranean agriculture, and machinery no one fully understands. Pollution, overcrowding, and gang violence are constants, and life for the lower classes is often brutal and short. Yet these immense structures are also engines of production, supplying the Astra Militarum with countless conscripts and the Imperium with the manufactured goods of a hundred thousand worlds. They embody both the scale and the squalor of humanity's future.
