A Drop Pod is a one-way assault craft used by the Space Marines to descend directly from orbit into the heart of a battle. Launched from a warship high above, the pod plummets through the atmosphere as a blazing meteor before firing retro-thrusters at the last moment and slamming into the ground. Its armoured petals blast open on impact, and the warriors within storm out to strike the enemy before they can react.
This method of attack embodies the Space Marines' doctrine of sudden, decisive assault. A drop pod allows them to bypass an enemy's defensive lines entirely, landing squads, heavy weapons, or even walkers precisely where they are needed, whether behind fortifications, atop objectives, or in the midst of a foe's rear echelon. The psychological shock of warriors falling from the sky is a weapon in its own right.
Once landed, a drop pod is spent, unable to return to orbit, though its hull may serve as cover or its mounted weapons as a fixed emplacement for the battle's duration. Entire companies can descend in a coordinated rain of pods, an overwhelming spearhead that seizes the initiative in the opening moments of a war. For the enemies of the Imperium, the sight of drop pods streaking down from the heavens means that death has already arrived among them.
