When Lorgar turned his gaze upon Ultramar, he did not strike first at Calth alone. The Manachean War was the wider wound, a savage conquest of the commonwealth-worlds along Ultramar's edge, unleashed to shatter Roboute Guilliman's realm before its master could rally. The Word Bearers fell upon these frontier systems with the zeal of the newly damned, preaching the coming of the Pantheon even as they burned the cities that would not kneel.
The defence was desperate and disjointed. Isolated garrisons of the Ultramarines and the auxilia of Ultramar fought delaying actions across a dozen worlds, buying time in blood while the greater catastrophe at Calth unfolded and drew the eye of history. World after world fell into the shadow, their compliance to the Imperium undone in a single season of orchestrated ruin.
The Manachean worlds became a proving ground for the Word Bearers' new gospel, their populations herded into slaughter-rites that fed the growing storm in the empyrean. Though the Ultramarines would eventually reclaim much of what was lost, the scars ran deep, and the memory of those betrayed frontier worlds hardened Guilliman's resolve into the cold, methodical vengeance that would define the loyalist war in the galaxy's south.
