The Lore of Death is the discipline of magic drawn from Shyish, the Amethyst Wind, the darkest and most sombre of the eight coloured winds of magic that blow across the world. Practitioners of this lore, known as Amethyst Wizards, are grim and introspective figures who dwell upon mortality, endings, and the slow erosion of all things. To them, death is not an enemy but the truest constant in a doomed world.
Within the Empire, the Amethyst Order teaches that all life casts a shadow, and that a wizard who masters Shyish may drain vigour from the living, hasten the passing of the wounded, or wither foes with the certainty of the grave. Their sorcery is feared even by allies, for those who commune so closely with death are marked by it, growing gaunt, pale, and strangely serene.
Crucially, the Lore of Death is not the same as necromancy, which perverts the Wind of Death to bind souls against their nature. Amethyst Wizards regard necromancers with revulsion, seeing in them a blasphemy against the natural order they revere.
