The Cult of Sigmar

The Cult of Sigmar is the state religion of the Empire and the faith woven most deeply into its soul, for it worships the very man who founded the nation. Sigmar Heldenhammer, chieftain-turned-god, is revered as the divine protector of humanity, and his sign — the twin-tailed comet and the warhammer — hangs over every Imperial town, army, and hearth.

The cult is led by the Grand Theogonist from the great Cathedral of Sigmar in Altdorf, and beneath him a vast hierarchy of Arch Lectors, priests, and lay brethren carries the faith to every corner of the Empire. Two of its Arch Lectors sit among the Elector Counts, giving the church a direct hand in the choosing of Emperors and a weight in Imperial politics no secular lord can ignore.

But the Cult of Sigmar is no faith of quiet cloisters. Its warrior priests march to war in the front rank, swinging great hammers and roaring prayers that put steel in the hearts of common soldiers and set the unclean dead to flight. From its zeal spring the witch hunters who root out mutation and heresy, and the flagellant mobs who scourge themselves in expectation of the end times. To be an Imperial citizen is, more often than not, to be a child of Sigmar — to believe that a man can rise by courage to godhood, and that faith and a warhammer can hold back the dark.
