A Commissar is a political officer and morale enforcer attached to the regiments of the Astra Militarum, the vast conscript armies of the Imperium. Trained from childhood in dedicated schola institutions, Commissars are drilled in doctrine, discipline, and unwavering faith, then embedded with fighting units to ensure that no soldier's courage fails at the decisive moment.
Their purpose is twofold. In the heat of battle, a Commissar rallies faltering troops through personal example, striding into gunfire while others cower and inspiring men to hold lines they would otherwise abandon. Yet the same officer also embodies the harsh price of failure, empowered to summarily execute cowards, deserters, and mutineers as a warning to the rest.
