An Apothecary is the specialist medic of a Space Marine Chapter, a warrior trained in both battlefield surgery and the arcane biological arts that sustain the Adeptus Astartes. Clad in distinctive white armour, he strides through the carnage tending the wounds of his transhuman brothers, for a single Space Marine is too precious to lose to a survivable injury.
His most sacred duty, however, comes not in saving the living but in honouring the dead. When a Space Marine falls, the Apothecary recovers his gene-seed, the implanted organs carrying the genetic legacy of the Chapter, using a specialised tool to extract the precious progenoids before they perish with the corpse. Without this grim harvest, a Chapter could not create new warriors, and its numbers would dwindle toward extinction.
The Apothecary is therefore guardian of a Chapter's very future, entrusted with the purity of its bloodline. He watches for signs of genetic corruption or mutation that might taint the gene-seed, and his judgement can determine which recruits are worthy of ascension. Part healer, part geneticist, part priest of the flesh, the Apothecary ensures that even in death a fallen brother gives rise to the warriors who will fight on in his stead, an unbroken line stretching back to the Space Marine Chapter's founding.
