The new rules for Ogor Mawtribes introduce tactical depth beyond basic charge mechanics, shifting emphasis toward positioning, activation sequencing, and managing army-wide buffs. In a breakdown for Warhammer Community, Anthony Magro of AoS Coach detailed how the new battletome structures army building, focusing on defensive layer interactions and objective control.
A central infantry shell
Magro's initial 2,000-point list uses the Maw-Cult Fanatics battle formation alongside the Lore of Gut Magic and battle tactics including Burning for Vengeance and Siege of Ashes. The core of the roster consists of a reinforced unit of Gluttons alongside reinforced Ironguts, supported by a Tyrant, a Butcher, and the Mawpit faction terrain.
This setup splits responsibilities between raw model count and concentrated damage. Gluttons provide the board control necessary to hold central objectives, while the Ironguts offer higher damage output. Defensive overlap is a key driver of the list: pairing the Tyrant with the reinforced Ironguts activates the Personal Enforcers ability, granting both units a 5+ ward save. The Tyrant's Brawlerguts ability further streamlines combat by allowing him to fight and immediately trigger the Ironguts with a +1 modifier to hit.
Flank mobility and utility screens
To balance the slower infantry core, the list incorporates a reinforced unit of Maulbeast Cavalry costing 560 points. This unit supplies the army's main threat range, forcing opponents to defend against flank attacks while the central units advance.
Utility functions fall to two separate units of Hunters with Sabrefangs at 160 points each. These units act as screens, control space around terrain, and complete battle tactics without pulling high-value combat units away from the primary engagement. Meanwhile, the Butcher operates as a flexible caster, capable of granting ward saves, protecting infantry against ranged attacks, or boosting offensive output where needed.
For players building Ogor Mawtribes armies, this strategy shows that the new battletome relies heavily on overlapping hero abilities rather than purely front-loaded charges. Correct activation timing and maintaining positioning for rules like Personal Enforcers take priority over simple frontal assault strategies.
