Servitor

A Servitor is a mind-wiped, cybernetically enhanced drone used throughout the Imperium to perform labor that would otherwise require thinking machines. Because artificial intelligence is forbidden and deeply feared, Imperial society instead fashions its automated workforce from human bodies, stripping away independent thought and grafting on the mechanical components needed for a given task.

Most Servitors are created from convicted criminals, the dying, or specially grown vat-flesh, their higher brain functions suppressed and replaced by rigid programming. Some are built for heavy industry, their arms swapped for tools, drills, or lifting gear. Others serve as living calculating engines, weapon platforms, medical assistants, or menial attendants. They labor without complaint, fatigue, or ambition, following implanted directives until they break down or are decommissioned.

The Adeptus Mechanicus is the foremost creator and user of Servitors, employing them to tend machinery and carry out repetitive functions in their forges and vessels, but they appear across nearly every Imperial institution. To most citizens they are unremarkable fixtures of daily life, shuffling through corridors on preprogrammed errands. Yet their existence hints at the grim logic underpinning the setting, where the horror of enslaving and hollowing out human beings is considered preferable to the far greater danger of trusting a machine to think for itself.
