The Scouring

The bitter aftermath of the Heresy, when the victorious loyalists hunted the broken traitor Legions into the Eye of Terror and beyond.

In the wake of the Emperor's fall came The Scouring, the long and merciless reckoning that followed the failure of the Horus Heresy. With the Warmaster slain and the Siege of Terra broken, the shattered traitor Legions fled the vengeance of the loyalists, and the Imperium turned to hunting them across the burning galaxy.

The defeated Chaos Space Marines were driven ever inward, pursued through ruined systems until at last they were cast into the Eye of Terror, that vast wound in reality where the material and the warp bleed together. There, sheltered in the domain of the Dark Gods, the traitors nursed their hatred and plotted the returns that would plague the Imperium for ten thousand years.

Across the reconquered worlds, the surviving loyalist Legions were broken apart under the Codex Astartes into the smaller Chapters that endure to this day, a reform meant to ensure no single warrior could ever again command the strength to threaten Terra. Old grudges festered and some loyal sons vanished into exile rather than submit to the new order.

The Scouring cleansed the outer Imperium of open rebellion and restored a semblance of order, yet it was a grim and joyless labour. The age of heroes and enlightenment was gone, replaced by suspicion, dogma, and the grinding certainty that the enemy had not been destroyed, only driven into the shadows to wait.
