Combining turn-based empire management with vast real-time battles, it let players command the sprawling armies of the Warhammer Fantasy world at a scale the tabletop could only imagine.

History reforged with magic

The leap to fantasy transformed the familiar formula. Flying dragons, spellcasting wizards, and towering monsters shattered the historical series' grounded battle lines, while legendary named lords led factions with wildly different playstyles. The launch roster centred on cornerstone powers — the beleaguered men of the Empire, the rampaging Orcs and Goblins, the grudge-bearing Dwarfs, and the undead Vampire Counts — each reworked to feel distinct on both the campaign map and the battlefield.

The first pillar of a trilogy

Creative Assembly conceived the game as the opening chapter of a planned trilogy, designed so that later entries could eventually be stitched together into one enormous combined campaign. That ambition, unusual for a strategy franchise, shaped years of expansions adding new races such as the Bretonnians, Beastmen, Wood Elves, and the rat-like Skaven, steadily enlarging an already generous foundation.

Reception and impact

The game was a critical and commercial triumph, praised for proving that Total War's systems suited fantasy warfare beautifully and for honouring the source material's flavour. It introduced a huge strategy audience to the Old World, revitalised interest in Warhammer Fantasy after the tabletop's own upheavals, and laid the groundwork for one of the most successful strategy series of its generation.
