The Cult of the Lady

The Lady of the Lake

The divine patron of Bretonnia, the Lady of the Lake embodies chivalry and purity, appearing only to knights worthy of her sacred Grail.

The Lady of the Lake is the goddess of Bretonnia, the divine embodiment of chivalry, purity, and honour to whom every true knight of that proud realm swears his sword and soul. Ethereal and beautiful, she is said to appear at sacred pools and mist-wreathed lakes, revealing herself only to those whose hearts are unstained by cowardice or dishonour.

Her worship is the very foundation of the Bretonnian nobility. A knight who proves himself worthy may be granted a vision of the Lady and permitted to drink from her Grail, and those who survive the sacred draught are transformed into Grail Knights, blessed champions of supernatural strength and unshakeable faith. Her chief prophetess, the Fay Enchantress, wields great power over the kingdom, and no king may rule without the Lady's blessing.

The cult teaches the code of chivalry as holy law: to protect the weak, to fight with honour, and to hold one's oaths above one's own life. To break faith with the Lady is to be cast out, stripped of knighthood and grace alike, a fate the proud lords of Bretonnia dread more than death itself.

Distant, radiant, and demanding, the Lady of the Lake asks perfection of her knights and offers in return a purpose worth dying for. She is the shining ideal at the heart of a feudal realm otherwise steeped in poverty, superstition, and rigid, ancient tradition.
