Mordheim: City of the Damned adapts one of Games Workshop's most fondly remembered spin-off tabletop games: the 1999 skirmish title Mordheim, set in an Empire city annihilated by a twin-tailed comet and left crawling with mutants, zealots, and treasure hunters. The prize drawing them all in is wyrdstone, shards of solidified magic scattered through the rubble, worth fortunes to distant patrons and horribly corrupting to anyone who lingers near it. Montreal studio Rogue Factor, in its debut project for Focus Home Interactive, translated that premise into a video game with an almost perverse commitment to the source material's cruelty.
Warbands, wounds, and wyrdstone
Players manage a persistent warband — human mercenaries of the Empire, the assassins of Skaven Clan Eshin, the devout Sisters of Sigmar, or the mutated Cult of the Possessed, with Witch Hunters and Undead arriving as post-launch additions — and guide it through turn-based battles fought in real-space rather than on a grid, where action points, facing, ambush stances, and terrain climbs decide who lives. What set the game apart was consequence: warriors who fall in battle can suffer permanent injuries, from lost limbs to lasting trauma, or die outright, and the campaign's economy demands regular shipments of wyrdstone to a warband's patron regardless of how badly the last expedition went. Every skirmish is a gamble weighed against a roster the player has spent hours building.
A cult game's cult adaptation
Reviews at the time were mixed, citing stiff presentation and an unforgiving learning curve, but the game found a loyal audience that valued exactly what mainstream critics bounced off: a faithful, high-stakes recreation of tabletop Mordheim's campaign structure, where loss is permanent and victory is always partial. It established Rogue Factor as a specialist in grim Games Workshop adaptations — the studio went on to make Necromunda: Underhive Wars — and it remains the definitive digital version of one of the Old World's darkest corners.
